Poppies

Toward the end of last week, I drew poppies in remembrance of lives lost in World War I.

"In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place;...." John McCrae

  1. Julana, when did you begin reading and referencing "A Pattern Language"? I LOVE this book! I was surprised as to just how much I loved this book. I have that set of three books by Christopher Alexandr but Pattern Language is the best. I read it probably 30 years ago....used some of the concepts when we added on to our house for the first time, and then again, the second time. When I am going to a new place I find myself looking for the Patterns there.... also, some of the concepts tie in with Wofensberger's work as well. (i.e., a building should look like what it is supposed to be....)!!! So people should live in HOMES, not hospitals, etc....

  4. Hey Mary Beth, probably three or four years ago. You’re the first person I’ve met who knows who he is, though he got applause when his name was mentioned at the Calvin Festival of Faith and Writing. I read of him in Gretchen Rubin’s book on happiness, and also in a post or two on The American Conservative. That is a fascinating book, and it explains a lot about why your house is so homey. I am so impressed you implemented his concepts. It helps me understand why I like certain things about this area, and why I hate other things. Sometimes I think of mailing a copy to everyone on the city council. St. Brigid’s implemented many of the patterns.
